Abstract
The transformations driven by digitalization have profoundly reshaped the structure of the economy and the behavior of contemporary society. In this context, the digital economy has become a key framework for sustainable development, with innovative entrepreneurship playing a strategic role in leveraging the opportunities offered by new technologies. This paper aims to analyze a series of internationally recognized indicators – such as the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), the Global Innovation Index (GII), and the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) – in order to assess the level of digital development and the dynamics of entrepreneurship in the technological era. The analysis focuses on Romania within the 2020–2024 time horizonand is conducted in a comparative European context to identify strengths, vulnerabilities, and necessary strategic directions. The anticipated conclusions highlight that, at the European level, the convergence of digitalization and innovative entrepreneurship can accelerate the transition toward a knowledge-based, competitive, and inclusive economy. In Romania's case, the results suggest a pressing need to strengthen digital human capital, technological infrastructure, and public policies that support entrepreneurial initiatives in order to reduce gaps compared to the European average and to unlock the country’s innovation potential.
